Description
The 1989 Gold Proof Double Sovereign 500th Anniversary is a one-year commemorative issue, replacing Benedetto Pistrucci’s traditional St George and the Dragon motif with a medieval-style design. Bernard Sindall designed both sides. The obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II seated in King Edward’s Chair as at her Coronation, while the reverse shows the crowned Royal Arms superimposed on a double Tudor Rose. Struck in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 15.98 grams and measures 28.40 mm in diameter.
