The 1997 Gold Proof Sovereign Raphael Maklouf is struck in 22-carat gold. The obverse bears Maklouf’s third definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem, while the reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George slaying the dragon, first created in 1817. This was the final year of the Raphael Maklouf portrait on the Sovereign before Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy appeared in 1998. The coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams and has a fineness of 91.67%.
