Description
Issued in 1855, this United Kingdom gold sovereign is a Victorian £1 coin struck by The Royal Mint. It is catalogued as bullion and supplied ungraded. The coin is 22-carat gold, with a stated fineness of 916.7, and represents the long-established sovereign denomination in an early Victorian setting.
The obverse features Queen Victoria’s Young Head portrait facing left, created by William Wyon. On the reverse, Jean Baptiste Merlen’s design presents the crowned shield of the Royal Arms within a wreath, rather than the later St George and the dragon motif. This is the London shield-reverse type, not the separately designed 1855 Sydney Mint issue.
It offers buyers a tangible piece of Victorian British coinage, combining gold content with a distinctive historical design. As this example is ungraded and no variety attribution is supplied, it is offered without assignment to either of the known 1855 Wyon-initial varieties.
