The 2008 Gold Proof Sovereign is a £1 British coin struck by The Royal Mint in 22-carat gold. Its reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s Saint George slaying the dragon, a design first introduced on the sovereign in 1817. The obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, adopted for British coinage in 1998. This proof sovereign weighs 7.98 grams, measures 22.05 millimetres in diameter and has a gold fineness of 91.67%.
