The 1881 Gold Proof Sovereign is a British £1 coin struck in 22-carat gold. Its reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s Saint George slaying the dragon, a design first introduced on the sovereign in 1817. Issued in proof format, the coin has the sovereign’s standard weight of 7.98 grams and measures 22.05 millimetres in diameter. Its gold fineness is 91.67%.
