Description
The 1980 Gold Proof Half Sovereign marked the inaugural year of the modern proof half sovereign series. Its obverse carries Arnold Machin’s second decimal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon. Struck by The Royal Mint in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs 3.99 grams and measures 19.30mm in diameter. This was the first proof half sovereign offered for individual collector sale since the reign of King Edward VII.
