The 2017 Gold Proof Quarter Sovereign 200th Anniversary marks two centuries since the first modern Sovereign appeared in 1817, following the Great Recoinage of 1816. Its reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s Saint George and the Dragon within a garter border bearing the motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE, echoing the original 1817 design. A one-year design variant, it differs from standard Proof Sovereigns through the use of this garter border. The obverse features Jody Clark’s fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Struck in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs 1.997 grams and measures 13.50mm in diameter.
